Growing Duration: Chives are a perennial plant that can grow and flower for several seasons. From sowing, plants begin to develop quickly and can be ready to harvest in approximately 60 to 90 days. However, as a perennial, they will continue to produce leaves year after year with proper care.
Special Features: Chives are known for their thin, cylindrical, deep green leaves, which have a mild flavor and are often used fresh as a seasoning in salads, soups, sauces, and other dishes. Additionally, the plant produces small, bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink, purple, or white during the summer, which are attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Chives are a hardy and easy-to-grow plant, making them ideal for both beginner and experienced gardeners.
Lighting: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ciboulette grows best in locations where it receives at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, although it can also tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates.
Watering: Ciboulette requires regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid waterlogging to prevent fungal diseases and root rot. It is preferable to keep the soil slightly moist, especially during periods of active growth and flowering.
Pests: Ciboulette is generally resistant to pests, although it can occasionally be affected by aphids, red spiders and snails. The use of environmentally friendly products, such as potassium soap and Neem oil, is recommended to keep pests under control.
Cold hardiness: Ciboulette is fairly cold hardy and can withstand light frosts, making it an excellent choice for early spring or late fall plantings. In colder climates, it can act as a hardy perennial, while in warmer climates, it can behave like an annual.
Substrate: A well-drained, organic-rich substrate is recommended. Ciboulette prefers light to medium soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Enriching the soil with compost or organic manure will promote healthy growth and increased leaf production.
Harvest: Ciboulette leaves can be harvested at any time once the plants have reached a suitable height. It is best to cut off the outer leaves first, allowing the inner leaves to continue growing. To prolong leaf production and encourage dense growth, make regular cuts and avoid cutting off more than one-third of the plant at a time.
Shipping: All shipments are made through Bluespress. Check out our growing manuals on our website: www.arcademendel.com .
